Air Miles card recommendation for day-to-day spending?

Current cards:

  • UOB One for grab, bills and insurance premium payments
  • Citibank SMRT for groceries cash back

Looking for air miles card as I can't hit the min. spend (for cash back cards) for my miscellaneous purchases (e.g. shopee, lazada, dining, etc.). I don't really spend on travel-related expenses either, which makes it difficult to find a suitable miles card.

Preferably no expiry date for the miles as I intend to slowly but steadily accumulate them via day-to-day purchases.

Thanks!

Citibank Premiermiles card for your everyday spending.

  • This is because the miles earned does not expire.

  • And you have a wide variety of miles partners to exchange airline tickets if SQ KRisflyer is not your thing. Citibank has the most number of airline partners.

This is a great card if you want to steadily accumulate them via day to day purchase

I would keep citi PM/ OCBC 90 N if I was you

UOB's suite of cards can be useful. The points pool together, and while the points has a 2 year validity, converting them to Krisflyer gives them another 3 years - making this a total of 5 years. This is more than enough time for even a low spender to accumulate a good amount of miles.

  1. UOB Preferred PLat Visa: 4mpd for paywave - essentially covers most of your groceries and dining spending. Some online spending also qualify

  2. UOB Prvi Miles Visa / Master: 1.4mpd

  3. if you are a female, UOB Lady's Solitaire allows you to choose 2 spending categories to earn 4mpd.

How much are you spending per month?

To make miles meaningful, one has to take a best in breed approach. Otherwise even if there's no expiry, it's going to take you forever to redeem a ticket.

If $500/month,

$500 * 4mpd = 2,000 miles

2,000 miles * 12 months = 24,000 miles (one-way Business Class to Bangkok is 21.5K)

If you use one single card,

$500 * 1.5mpd = 750 miles

750 * 12 months = 9,000 miles (One-way Economy class to... Malaysia)

You will have to save the miles for 2.6 years just to break even.
