A bit confused... What's the difference between a stock market future vs the normal stock market prices? I keep seeing the word 'futures' recently. Does it indicate anything different?

Futures indicate expecation for period forward. You can look at futures to indicate potential market direction but you shouldn't be too bothered by it.
