Understanding your personality (and that of your teammates!) can make a big difference in the company culture.
Great teams are made up of personalities, not just skills. Without the right personality to fit in with your team, it could gravely affect the results and satisfaction you desire at work, even if you have the expertise.
Furthermore, having a better understanding into your personality could also help you realise why you are underachieving or feeling dissatisfied at work.
There are scientific ways to simplify the complexities of personality management. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), for example, is the most widely used personality inventory, can help us better understand the different personalities and how you can approach your working relationships with them.
Being aware of the character traits of your teammates makes it easier for you to work together with them. Here are some personality types that you may recognise and how you can work with them.
A good challenge. Rational and logical, Analysts are willing to try their hand at difficult tasks.
Following others. Independence isn’t a characteristic; it’s important for their self -image.
Believe in their competence. Analysts are driven to understand and create, so work with them to come up with creative strategies and inspire them to explore.
Helping and connecting with others. Because of their sensitivity, empathy comes naturally.
Injustice and wrongdoing. They believe in creating a kinder world and strive to do so.
Earn their trust and show respect through being authentic. They are driven by altruism and compassion.
Order, security, stability. They work hard and expect the same of others.
Drama and inconsistency. It's hard for them to accept people who lack their level of conscientiousness.
Define the roles and responsibilities from the beginning. They prefer following established best practices and enjoy following through on things from start to finish.
Spontaneity and risk-taking. They live for the thrill of handling things on the fly.
Monotony. Comfort zones are not where they rest.
Give them space to explore. They love being on the leading edge and are best suited for projects that let them to discover.
Knowing and understanding your personality type can make a huge difference in planning your next career move. It helps to learn about the types of jobs that are suited for your personality, so you can make transition confidently.
