Should you buy the actual ring before popping the question? One of my friend actually ordered a set of 3 stackable rings at the jewellers but broke up after giving the first promise ring...?
I think you should start by asking yourself the question: is there a reason why your friend is spending money on the ring instead of the other way around? Why should you friend be left bagholding instead of the other person? It is time your friend sent their ex a bill for the rings.

How much did you all spend on wedding, renovation + furniture, honeymoon? Any savings left afterwards? Need a gauge. Thanks!?
Hi anon, I detailed the bulk of my wedding expenses here along with my honeymoon costs. https://seedly.sg/questions/could-you-share-what-was-your-wedding-honeymoon-budget-breakdown-like We were in the red after the wedding, but had been saving money for a full year to negate this. I spent slightly over $4K over 2 weeks on hotels on my honeymoon. The most costly night was at Mount Fuji, hotel rates there are quite ridiculous, especially around Christmas. Now I'm on to my renovations. It's a resale 5 room and will probably incur at least $60K on renovations, before appliances.

I realised that there are quite a few brides-to-be who bought their photoshoot wedding gowns from Taobao, any tips or horror stories?

Can rent from shops, cheaper and no need to care/keep it later on.

Do you start talking to your gf/bf about finance before or after getting proposed to?

I was together with my current wife for 5 years before proposing so we had long enough time to discuss. good thing is we were very much aligned in life's direction and spending habit's so there wasn't anything much to worry before. An advice would be to discuss and plan your finances before taking the relationship to the next level :)

Could you share what was your wedding/honeymoon budget breakdown like?
Hi Yixuan, I got married last year. My wife joined the BTB forums and sussed out a lot of info. Too much to share but I will provide a breakdown and some tips. Here's the breakdown (I won't provide vendor names unless you need it) - Banquet: This was held at a local hotel, 16 tables and we added some food stations for guests before the ceremony began. ~$28K and this was saved for a year from our salaries. I would say that having a good wedding coordinator would help you a lot, our coordinator helped us from things like chasing the wedding card printing vendor to helping us take care of all the nitty gritty details. Banquet manager was also important to keep the timetable running smoothly - Emcee: Highlight of the show. He was fantastic and friends who were getting married after us asked for his contact, so that says a lot. A professional Emcee works the event at a very different level. We had a meet up 6 months before to discuss and set expectations. ~$1K. Saved up. His wife also does table deco so we added on for $250 and were blown away.Ani - MUA: From an old contact of mine. <$1K, saved up. Important: Go for your trail make up. You will see how MUA's style works for you and discuss changes accordingly before actual day. - Photographer: We reviewed portfolios and found one. He'd been shooting for 5 years. $1.2K, saved up. Same as emcee, had a meeting to discuss and lay out expectations - Videographer: Same as photog. We reviewed portfolios and shortlisted. $1.7K, saved up. Same as emcee, had a meeting to discuss and lay out expectations - Bridal Gown and Groom Suit Package: <$4K. Saved up. Came with pre-wedd shoot. BMW chauffer driven car on that day. Photo album. 2nd suit and dinner gown. Dad and brother also got a suit. I got to take home my tailored suit (for 1st March in). Very budget friendly considering. Some places were charging $3K for just one gown and suit with nothing else. We found them in a very unexpected way. Was going around bridal shops and booked a few appointments, then when on the way to one vendor, we keyed in this vendor by mistake since their names were very very similar and ended up at this vendor instead. We had an awesome coordinator who helped my wife with her gown selections and her experience really shone through. This is also a very important thing. - Ring: <$1.2K. Saved up. I went back to the vendor that helped me with my engagement ring. - Guo Da Li: <$1K including the items and the liquor. This really depends. Sit down with the opposite side and discuss what is expected. - Animation video: We didn't have a gate crash so we commissioned a MY based animator to make a short 3 minute video about our story. Very worth it. Guests loved it. $1.2K - Honeymoon: SQ J to Tokyo via Aegean Miles, so only really spent on hotels and expenditure. ~$176 EUR in taxes, but who cares when you're flying J? I wish you best of luck!

Depending on how much is your savings. If your savings is $100k, $50k in Reno and wedding seems fair or even too less to some. my engagement ring costed less than $2k and I got it without my wife around. still prefer the feeling of surprise. :)

Which cashback card is recommended for big ticket purchases (e.g. wedding)?

The cashback or miles from paying for wedding itself is usually not great. One strategy would be to combine it with sign-on bonuses. For e.g. - Sign-up Card A (spend $4k within first 3 months to get $200 sign-up bonus plus x% cashback for the $4k) and swipe $4k on Card A - Sign-up Card B (spend $10k within first 2 months to get $150 sign-up bonus plus y% cashback for the $10k) and swipe $10k on Card B - SIgn up Card C...blablabla Replace the "cashback" above with "miles" if you are more inclined to miles. Check out singsaver or moneysmart for a list of good credit card sign-on bonuses. Under normal circumstance (pre-Covid19), I would suggest going for miles. Combining all sign-on bonuses (miles) and miles from swiping your $20k, you can probably get a pair of business class tickets (one-way only) to Europe. If you are planning a honeymoon and is confident travel will open up soon, perhaps Miles?

Any recommendation for wedding suits? Any discounts or good deals? Not sure if to buy a suit or a tailor made one. Whats the difference?

I was introduced to Edit Suits by a few of my friends who had made their suits there. They are MTM and price wise is pretty affordable for their italian and british fabrics, starting at around $700 for half canvas suits. Also depending on which tier of italian or british fabrics you're looking at! And they have wedding package as well. You can check them out! @Mike As far as i know Suit Supply are off the racks. Price wise they are ranging the same as Edit Suits. But I would opt for going to a place where I can customised my suit if I'm paying that amount. It's feels more personalised.

I married with just an $80 ring set and I’m not your average poor ;) So being rich doesn’t mean you need a expensive ring. You just need an understanding marriage.
