What should I do with my cash on hand during periods of recession? should I absolutely not invest, or purchase bonds, or commodities like gold?

During recession, there are ample of opportunites around for you to look at. You can even find good companies trading at good or cheap valuation. If I am in your shoe, I will be investing most of my cash in equity during recession.

During recessions, there are many stocks on discount! Who doesn't like discounts? Therefore, investing more during recessions would make more send than investing more when the economy is peaking. Of course, whether they are good stocks or bad stocks, you'll have to evaluate them yourself. Also bear in mind that you should have some money set aside for rainy days!
