What is the purpose of the SPDR S&P500 (S27) being listed on the SGX if it is still subject to 30% withholding tax?

Isn't the S27 as good as being a US stock?

Hi anon,

As Frankie has mentioned, this is for

  • Investors without access to the US market

  • Investors who want to buy and hold but don't want to pay a foreign share custody fee

Point 1 is really moot though, most brokerages have access to the US market nowadays.

However, note that

  • Liquidity is very poor

  • Tracking error is almost certainly worse than US listed S&P 500 ETFs like VOO

-for those investors without access to U.S. markets, or a more expensive (= more lucrative) but also less liquid way of the fund companies to offer at a stock exchange that Singapore residents are focused on. customer beware.
