What happens to my co-owned property and my spouse's cpf if she passes away without a will?

Does it automatically go to me or does it just go to the government? How important is it to write a will then?

Just to add on, do note that wills do not cover CPF. If there is no nomination made, the CPF monies will be distributed to next of kin by the Public Trustee’s Office (PTO), which will charge an admin fee for this (0.3%-2.4%). Making a CPF nomination will remove the admin fee component. In addition, even if your spouse has made a CPF nomination before getting married, the nomination will be voided upon your marriage so a new one will need to be made.

If you co-own your property as joint tenants with your spouse, then it will go to you since you're the surviving tenant.

For CPF, in the event that your spouse did not nominate you, then it will go under Interstate Succession Act where it will be distributed between you and your spouse's parents/siblings/children etc.

A will is important because it governs the distribution of your assets according to your wishes. If not, it is up to the prevailing government laws for distribution, and you're gonna have a very hard time disputing it.

I think it goes to you under the estate law.

The default option for HDB is Joint Tenancy Agreement, which means the property will go to the surviving spouse when one dies.

In case you have tenancy-in-common, the deceased's share will be distributed according to the Intestate Succession Act.

CPF is also based on the intestate succession act if there is NO NOMINATION.
