We set aside a fixed amount of money to contribute into an OCBC account for upcoming big ticket items. OCBC accounts has a feature which allows you to set goals (only on web version) and i find it works like a charm in helping you partition your money within the same account into separate buckets.

We started saving together when we confirmed that we will definitely settle down together as the last thing we want is money problem when we decide to break up.
As a start, we put in equal amount of money for our wedding related expenses as we (or rather me) agree that wedding costs should be shared. We also set a budget and plan how we are going to spend this wedding funds together. This way, we are both clear and agree on what should or should not be spent.
When we decide to get our own home instead of staying with our parents, we started a separate joint account for the new home as we are definitely going to spend significantly on renovations, furniture and electrical stuffs. For this, we agree that it should be prorated to our income and we continue this arrangement as subsequent savings contribution will be used to pay for household bills.
We used the most traditional method of excel to keep track of all our household related expenses from than on.
We do not really have a budget for groceries and household stuffs but we do keep track of what we spend. Sometimes we stock up on stuffs due to promotion and savings.

We prepare our own breakfast so that we don't have to buy McDonald breakfast every morning. It is cheaper and is also healthier that way. We also make it a point to go to work early so that we could take the train before 7.45 am to cut down on transportation costs.
