Does that mean the miles game is not worth playing, especially if you are not a high spender (i.e $500 / month)? This video seems to make those of us who don't spend much loses faith in joining the miles game. What are your thoughts on this?

I personally feel you do not have to be a high spender to play the mile games. Especially so if you are looking at miles that do not have an expiry such as DBS Altitude and Citi PremierMiles - good for those who wish to slowly accumulate their miles and not be pressured to spend a minimum each month. Which could be the case for some cashback cards that have a stipulated minimum spend in order to enjoy the higher-than-average cashback % - say 1.5% cashback for StanChart Unlimited versus 5% for DBS Live Fresh for minimum $600 spend per month.
More importantly, keep track of your spending pattern and study which cards will help you maximise the rewards you can earn. You can view these rewards as "bonuses" so don't be compelled to spend more in order to gain more bonuses. All the best!

Yes. Miles is very cheap to start with.
In addiiton, airlines are always constantly devaluing your miles this makes it tough and entices you to keep spending. Don't forget occassionally you are always left with orphan miles after redeeming a trip and again you are enticed to spend. Hence, 1.4 miles earn rate to us is actually much lesser, because of "the remaining change of air miles"
