Question for HR people who work in the government sector: Is it true that there is a salary cap for every job grade?

The government says that they are less focussed on degrees, but it does not seem to be the case.

I am experienced, but do not have a degree. A fresh grad can come in and be of a higher position than me.

Hi Anon. Generally, all companies have a cap (or ceiling) for each grade/level. If you want to earn a higher amount than the ceiling, then you will need to move to next grade. There are cases where employee earns more than the ceiling for their grade, but it would mean that their future annual increments will be alot lesser.

I have not work for government sector so I can't comment on that. But what I heard from market is that government sector focus on degree (esp local uni degree) more than private sector. Private sector usually look at experience and skill set. Good degree would be a bonus.

Private sector values experience more than the govt sector. Govt got different grades as you know and it had never changed much. Of course, in term of job stability, we don't see huge retrenchment from govt...

They have only been all talk only. Scholars are still their favourite and will keep hiring them. Even university matters.
