You can actually open a CDP account and a brokerage account online these days, although I will say that sometimes having someone to speak to if you have questions at the initial stages will help to allay some of your concerns. Generally there won't be any charges for speaking to an advisor (unless they are fee-based or hourly rate)

I don't think there will be charges, though it will be good to research on what the advisor suggests, so as to ensure the recommendation fits your needs and requirements.
