Hi, just recently renovated my kitchen, am thinking of getting more kitchen appliances for cooking since WFH started, any recommendations on affordable items?
Add few notes about some appliances: (A) Airfryer: Where to get: Can get cheaper new set at carousell than taobao. Cons: (1) Size - A lot of people selling due to: It's limited size compare to oven. Can't fit in a whole chicken as compare to a bigger portable oven / wateroven. (2) Efficiency - Often had to open and turn / flip the item otherwise it won't cook and the hot air all escape, so it has to restart the cooking process again, pretty waste of time and energy. (3) Cleaning - I use one just to cook some chicken chops / broccoli, but each time i have to wash 3 layer ( The outer pot, the stainless steel and the basket ), i've check some chef's recommended post, the advice is to use conventional oven (build in or portable) better since we only need to wash 1 item (the plate that contains the food!) vs 3 item!!! (Total waste of time, water and effort!) (4) Healthier - Not necessary. See: https://cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com/wellness/air-fryer-healthy-vegetables-fried-chicken-nuggets-13075434 ! So one is better off buying a large conventional portable oven if can afford or bigger Toaster oven that is also quite affordable. (B) Multifunctional Kitchen Storage Not applicances but helps store things neatly and compact and save space. ! (C) Essential Kitchen tools for every home kitchen: See Chef Ming ( Not our Seedly DJ Ming :P ) where he gives a low-down on essential kitchen tools like pots/pans/cooking utensils/powered applicances (excep air fryer which i don't agree) at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nOOjA02K8U For cheaper version of appliances, can source new one from Carousell or Taobao (just need the converter plugs, since the voltage of appliances from China is the same as Singapore). Happy Cooking ! :D

What is the theme that you would want for your ideal home? Been thinking between minimalistic / modern / urban / zen... Something that looks good but also low maintenance. Ya'll got any preferences?

Minimalist. I mean...the SG environment is already feeling so cluttered and oversaturated, so I don't wanna come home to a cluttered house! Scandi/minimalistic homes tend to feel somewhat cold to me so warm tones are great, mix of light and dark wood, whites and neutrals. There are great options for laminate/wood like tile flooring that are waterproof/scratch resistant so I'll likely be going for that! something like this house perhaps? :) https://instagram.com/cocoyuko_?igshid=jrjb4s0a7zuu

Hi, what are some good quality furniture from IKEA that’s worth buying? How do you know what materials are good?
Hey anon! That’s actually a really good question. As much as we do love IKEA, sometimes their products are not as durable as we’d like them to be… So I did a little research and found out a few pretty solid (figuratively and literally) products that have stellar reviews! ! At the end, there are tips on how to spot good quality materials from IKEA. 😉 1. Kallax shelves ($99) ! Source: Ikea Singapore A fan favourite is the Kallax shelf, which is perfect for stacking and organizing, and finding inventive ways to divide a room. You can choose to use them standing up or lying down, against the wall or to divide the room - you can even personalize them with drawers, shelves, boxes and inserts. On top of that they are really quite sturdy! The Kallax shelving units are really popular because of their clean lines and many possibilities. 2. Poäng Armchair ($109) ! Source: Ikea Singapore Did you know that the Poäng has been in production for over 40 years? It is one of the most ubiquitous pieces in IKEA’s history, and has a reputation for adding "effortless style to any room in your home". The Poäng armchair’s frame is made of layer-glued bent oak which provides comfortable resilience and it’s high back gives good support for your neck. 3. Äpplarö Drop-leaf table ($249) ! Source: Ikea Singapore This garden dining table has room for 4, 6 or 8 people simply by folding one or two drop-leaves up or down. This helps you save space when it’s just you and your immediate family, but you can easily accommodate a crowd as well! Most importantly, all pieces in the Äpplarö family are made of solid acacia wood, which is an economical and visually appealing choice for outdoor furniture. If you check out the US website, you’ll see that the Äpplarö series has overall many great reviews. // 🚨So, how do you know what items from IKEA are good quality? The best way to find out is to check the materials it is made out of. A good rule of thumb is to avoid furniture that is made with particleboard . Particleboard is made out of sawdust and wood chips that have been processed down into a piece of wood. But, this wood is not solid and can fall apart over time . Furniture made of solid wood —preferably a hardwood like oak or acacia , but even a softwood like Swedish pine —is always going to be sturdier . In summary, ❎ Particleboard ✅ Solid Wood Hope this helps! Good materials come at a price... But you can also check out these value for money items at IKEA under $10!

The most expensive part are usually any procedures that involves hacking, which usually takes a huge chunk of your renovation cost. secondly i guess is tiles work! thirdly would probably be carpentry work, things like built in wardrobe or false ceiling can be a significant cost as well. least expensive would probably be painting work if any. :)

Hey Rachelle! Firsrly is good to have some ideas and design of what you want your dream house to be like. I did a lot of work by browsing Pinterest, and renovation blogs. i also went onto forums to check out for recommendations. Once shortlisted, I actually meet up with a few contractors and IDs to have them quote me. By meeting them, you have a better idea on costing and you might even be able to bounce off your ideas from there. with thAt, you should be able to have a clear picture how much your renovation will roughly cost you. :)

When should you go to a direct contractor VS an interior designer?

Three key things in my view: 1) You are price sensitive 2) You already know exactly what you want (ie dont need the ID for ideas/suggestions) 3) You have some time on your hands to manage some of the logistics of the renovation (mostly being present when sub contractors come)

Depending on how much is your savings. If your savings is $100k, $50k in Reno and wedding seems fair or even too less to some. my engagement ring costed less than $2k and I got it without my wife around. still prefer the feeling of surprise. :)

What are some value for money things to buy at Ikea under $10?
Hi Anon! You mean apart from the meatballs, hot dogs and ice cream? 🤤 Just kidding, but also not really. 🤷 ♀️ There’s actually loads of home essentials you can buy from IKEA under $10. They have a ‘ Everyday essentials under $10 ’ section which features items such as food containers and plates, to bath mats and towels. But assuming these are things you already have at home, and don’t need replenishing any time soon… I dug a little deeper and here are some serious steals I found under $10 ! ! Disclaimer: Information accurate as of 14 Sep 2020. 1. LACK - Side table ($9.90) ! Source: Ikea Singapore - Colours: Black / White - Size: 55 x 55 cm ✍️ Wait… A chic side table for $9.90 ?!?! Adds to cart Note that only the black and white colours are on offer now! 2. TRÄDKRASSULA - Quilt cover and pillowcase ($9.90) ! Source: Ikea Singapore - Colours: White / Blue - Quilt Cover: 200 (L) x 150 (W) cm - Pillow Case: 50 (L) x 80 (W) cm 🛏 Even Single Quilt Covers without Pillowcases on online platforms such as Shopee easily go for at least $11 . ! Source: Shopee Don’t worry, the other sizes for this same design are on sale too! - Quilt cover and 2 pillowcases, 200 x 200cm - $14.90 - Quilt cover and 2 pillowcases, 240 x 220cm - $19.90 3. LOTS - Mirror ($9.90 for 4 pcs) ! Source: Ikea Singapore - Size: 30 x 30 cm ✨ This means that the price per piece is just $2.48 ! The usual price for this is actually $19.90 for 4 pieces so that’s a whooping $10 discount right now! When utilised properly, mirrors are actually a great way to create an illusion of a bigger house . So if that’s something you are considering for your room/house, now wouldn’t be a bad time to get some mirrors! // 🛠 If you are looking for home renovations related suggestions, feel free to ask our ‘Renovations’ community!
